Unforgettable Landscape (Hualien)
film 10min
2012

Residency program at National Dong Hwa University, Taiwan, 2012

For a month from November in 2012, I joined the artist in residency program at Dong Hwa University in Hualien country on the eastern coast of Taiwan.I asked people I met there including a Japanese man one question what is your unforgettable landscape?. Firstly I asked them to draw the landscape and then to take me to the place and documented each process in the film. The final result became an installation piece in the exhibition at the end of the program. It consisted of the films I made, the documentation of the workshop as well as the collected photographs and words from the participants.
The participants took me to a variety of places - a quiet breakwater, an unused dancing hall and the Imperial Japanese Army residences. The memory of each interviewee and the episodes of the landscapes were spoken about in a matter-of-fact way which was far from dramatic. However in the film the personal narratives change gradually into stories which are shared with the audience. For example, when the camera captured their expression in a intimate distance with the unusual ritual of visiting strangerユs memorable places.
