SOLO EXHIBITION
Unforgettable Landscape (Pigeon loft) oil on canvas, acrylic on paper 2012 Installation at Youkobo Art Space, Tokyo, 2012 artist talk @ Youkobo Art Space >>>> |
This is a painting project I have been working on since 2012. The paintings are drawn based on the stories of the people I interviewed and recorded. My friend T's unforgettable landscape was his grandfather's pigeon loft. I recorded his story and played it again and again while I listened and drew. The final paintings depicted a mixture of images from found images of pigeon lofts of all ages and countries and my friendT's landscape in his memory. At the same time, it is also made up of all-sorts of the pieces of my memory as I am the painter of this project. The landscape in the paintings has never existed anywhere in the world, however this can be a landscape which has been formed from the people's memories. These landscapes evoke a collective nostalgia which doesn't belong to any one particular individual's memory. This is a project like a random collage of the pieces of memories. |
"When I woke up from the nap, my grandpa stood up by my bed and tapped me to wake me up. And then he said " shall we go?" There was his pigeon loft for pigeon racing. There were forty to fifty of them saying coo, coo, coo - my silly grandpa. "
